1.For differentiating housings using metric tapped holes, add (\"M\") designation to the housing size: Example: SAE 2M indicating SAE 2 flywheel housing with metric tapped holes.

2.Figures shown for bore and face runout are full indicator readings (FIM). Runout to be measured on assembled engine mounted on its supports and held in its normal operating position. For measuring procedure see SAE J1033.

1.For differentiating housings using metric tapped holes, add \"M\" deignation to the housing size: Example: SAE 2M indi-cating SAE 2 flywheel housing with metric tapped holes.

2.Tapped holes shall be equally spaced on each side of the vertical centerline \"Y\" axis. Figure 1.

3.Tapped holes shall be threaded in accordance with: Metric: ISO Coarse pitch series thread class fit 6H as specified in ISO 965/11. Inch: UNC Class 2B of ANSI B1.1 screw threads.

4.Minimum bolt thread engagement length shall be 1.5 times the nominal bolt diameter for \"Gray Iron\" housing and 2 times the nominal bolt diameter for aluminum housings. Recommended minimum thread engagement length values are for SAE Grade 8 bolt and torque application.

5.An \"E\" dimension of 100.1 (3.94) is required for SAE No. 5 housing when an 8 size driving ring type overcenter clutch, conforming to SAE J621 is used.

6.An \"E\" dimension of 71.4 (2.81) is required for SAE No. 4 housing when 6-1/2 or 7-1/2 size driving ring type overcenter clutches conforming to SAE J621 are used.

7.Optional 24 bolt spacing for SAE no. 1 and 2 aluminum housings.

8.An \"E\" dimension of 133.4 (5.25) is optional for flywheel housing when numbers 1, 1/2, 0, and 00 when multiplate clutches are used.

1.For differentiating housings with metric bolt holes, add \"M\" designation to the housing size, Example: SAE 2M.

2.For nominal flange pilot diameter, Table 1 Table 2.

3.Figures shown for bore and face runout are full indicator readings (FIM). For runout measuring procedure, consult with transmission manufacturer.

4.For hole spacing, Figure 1. For hole locating tolerance, Figure 4.5.For nominal bolt circle \"C,\" Table 1 Table 2.

6.These holes may be drilled to 11.00 (0.433) diameter to provide common hole size for metric and inch bolts. 3.8 bolts should be used with thick hard washers.

An (R) symbol to the leftof the document title indicates a complete revision of the report.PREPARED BY THE SAE CLUTCH, FLYWHEEL, AND HOUSING STANDARDS COMMITTEE-9-SAE J617 Revised MAY92Rationale—The following revisions are made to this SAE Standard.1.Revised Title. Title was \"Engine Flywheel Housings.\" Revised to \"Engine Flywheel Housing andMating Transmission Housing Flanges.\"NOTE—Current SAE J617c covered the mating transmission housing flanges, but the title did not specifyit.2.Revised approving committee and revision note. SAE J617c was revised by Construction MachineryTechnical Committee on June 1976. This document should be controlled and approved by theEngine Committee.3.Revised Scope to indicate areas covered by this document.4.Added Purpose.5.Added References, Applicable SAE Documents, and Applicable ISO Documents.6.Added dimensions and tolerances note.7.Added \"Engine Flywheel Housing Group\" (Item 4), to correlate applying figures and tables.8.Added \"Mating Transmission Housing Flange Group\" (Item 5), to correlate applying figures andtables.9.Revised and rearranged bolt spacing on Figure 1, added (X) and (Y) axis, and 24 bolt hole pattern.10.Added Figure 2—\"Flywheel Housing Flange Dimension\" for better clarification (Removed fromFigure 1):•Geometric Symbols•Flange Runout Tolerances•Tapped holes true position locating tolerance11.Added Figure 3—\"Depth of Pilot Bore (Dimension E) for Various Crankshaft—Flywheel MountingSystem.\"NOTE—Did it because location of \"E\" dimension causing confusion. Pictorial illustration eliminates anyquestion.12.Revised Table 1:•Revised tabulation order of engine housing sizes—from smallest to largest size.•Specified pilot diameter \"A\" tolerance next to diameter A.•Revised SAE Flange pilot bore and face runout limits.NOTE—This was done because current runout tolerances are difficult to hold. Proposed new runoutlimits are in line with ISO limits. (SAE No. 3 thru 00)•Added tolerance to \"E\" dimension (for this purpose engine industry was surveyed).•Added metric bolt sizes (same as ISO).•Added optional 24 bolt hole pattern for SAE No. 1 and 2 aluminum flywheel housings.•Added instructions to differentiate housings using metric size bolts (Note 1).•Added bolt grade and torque limit to minimum bolt thread engagement length recommendations.•Removed reference note d—for 3/8 size bolts used on SAE No. 1 housing prior to 1953. (30+ yearspassed).13.Provided Figure 4—\"Mating Transmission Housing Flange Dimension\" for better clarification.•Geometric symbols•Flange runout tolerances•Drill thru holes locating toleranceSAE J617 Revised MAY9214.Provided Table 2—\"Tolerances and Hole Sizes for Mating Transmission Housing Flanges\"•Revised piloting diameter tolerance: From -0.005 to -0.008 for SAE 1/2, 0, 00 housings•Revised SAE flange radial and face runout limits: From 0.005 FIM to 0.008 FIM—For SAE 3, 2, 1 housings From 0.005 FIM to 0.010 FIM—For SAE 1/2, 0, 00 housings•Provided hole sizes for metric bolts•Increased clearance holes sizes: From 0.047 to 0.06 for SAE 1/2, 0, 00 housingsRelationship of SAE Standard to ISO Standard—Not applicable.Application—This SAE Standard specifies the major dimensions and tolerances for Engine FlywheelHousings and the Mating Transmission Housing Flanges. It also locates the crankshaft flange face, orthe transmission pilot bore (or pilot bearing bore) stop face in relation to housing SAE flange face. This document is not intended to cover the design of the flywheel housing face mating with the enginecrankcase rear face or the design of housing walls and ribs.
