Lost Horizon

In Frank Capra’s Lost Horizon, the passengers of a plane attacked after the takeoff in China are thrown together against their will only to be deposited in Shangri-La. During the life there, they realize that a family gathering should be about forming connections and taking time to consider one’s place in the family, in the community and even in the world. The Human Comedy

Maybe as the finest film about the US “home front” during World War Two, The Human Comedy

is a portrait of a family dealing with life after the oldest son is drafted into military service (兵役). Mickey Rooney plays the younger son missing his older brother but trying to get on with his life in high school.

Miracle on 34th Street

The Christmas classic was released in 1947, but it essentially set the stage for the 1950s. It’s about the birth of the post-war consumer culture, and how affection for family and friends can be best expressed by the act of spending money. Mary Poppins

Sometimes a family needs to make a change but the Banks family is definitely in a rut. George seems to care more about his banking job than his wife and children. He needs to learn that sometimes all you need is a laugh for a laugh’s sake, tuppence( 两便士) to feed the birds and the time to fly a kite. In the end, his change is as powerful as Ebenezer Scrooge’s. Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope

Star Wars is about what happens after you make the choice to leave home for good. Of course, for Luke Skywalker, the choice to “take the first step into a larger world” is made for him when his family is killed. But his process of going out into the universe and discovering himself also involves gathering a new family.

21.Which of the following acted in one of the above films? A.Mickey Rooney. B.Frank Capra. C.Luke Skywalker. D.Ebenezer Scrooge. 22.Which film attracts people loving Christmas most? A.Lost Horizon. B.Mary Poppins. C.Miracle on 34th Street.

D.Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope. 23.The passage is written to . A.advertise some new films. B.interest foreign film lovers. C.present some film standards. D.recommend some family films.

A few years ago,I took a sightseeing trip to Washington, D.C.Standing outside the Ronald Reagan Center, I heard a voice say, “Can you help me ?” When I turned around,I saw an elderly blind woman with her hand extended. In a natural reflex, I reached into my pocket, pulled out all of my loose change and placed it on her hand without even looking at her.I was annoyed at being bothered by a beggar. But the blind woman smiled and said, “I don’t want your money.I just need help finding the post office.”

In an instant, I realized what I had done.I judged another person simply for what I assumed she had to be.I hated what I saw in myself. This incident re-awakened my belief in humility(谦逊), even though I’d lost it for a moment.

The thing I had forgotten about myself is that I am an immigrant.I left Honduras and arrived in the U.S.at the age of 15.I started my new life with two suitcases, my brother and sister, and a strong, serious-minded mother.Through the years,I have been a dishwasher, mechanic and pizza delivery driver among many other humble jobs, and eventually I became a network engineer.

In my own life, I have experienced many open acts of prejudice ( 偏见)I remember a time, at age 17 —— I worked as a waiter, and I heard a father tell his little boy that if he did not do well in school, he would end up like me.I have also witnessed the same treatment of my family and friends, so I know what it’s like, and I should have known better.

But now, living in my American middle-class lifestyle, it is too easy to forget my past, to forget who I am and where I have been, and to lose sight of where I want to be going. That blind woman on the streets of Washington, D.C.,cured me of my blindness. She reminded me of my belief in humility and to always keep my eyes and heart open.By the way,I helped that lady to the post office. And in writing this essay, I hope to thank her for the priceless lesson. 24.We can learn from the first two paragraphs that . A.the author regretted his act of prejudice B.the blind woman needed the money badly C.the author was as poor as the blind woman D.the author was a native American

25.According to Paragraph 4, hearing the father’s words, the author was probably . A.rather hurt B.very excited C.deeply moved D.greatly inspired

26.According to the passage, the author probably agrees that one should . A.be nice to the elderly and the disabled B.try to experience different kinds of life C.treat others equally with love and respect D.think about one’s past as often as possible

27.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A.Learn from your past

B.How my dream comes true C.A Belief that will never change D.A priceless lesson in the street

C

This year's flu season is pretty scary. To try to minimize the effects, public officials are still urging anyone who hasn't yet gotten their flu shot to get one as soon as possible. However, even if every single person got a shot in the arm, the vaccine( 疫 苗 )—with its excellent 36 percent effectiveness—would not prevent everyone from getting infected with the annoying virus. Knowledge is power, so here's what goes on in your body when you come down with the flu.

The influenza virus primarily attacks your nose, throat, and the tubes that lead to your lungs. But the flu is so much more than that. Your muscles ache, your head hurts, and your appetite goes down, among other things. To our surprise, almost all of these symptoms have less to do with the virus itself than with your immune( 免疫的)response to them. Unfortunately, the very defense you have in place to get rid of the flu is the reason you feel so painful when you recover.

The virus usually enters through your mouth, typically by way of your hands. But it takes a few days for symptoms to set in. While this process might cause some harm to your nose and throat, it's nothing major, and nothing like the symptoms that typically accompany a bad or even mild case of the flu.

The real fun starts when your immune system begins to fight. Your immune system comes in two parts: the innate system and the adaptive. The innate immune system is essentially an

all-purpose tool. As soon as your body senses the presence of any injury or invader ( 入侵者), the innate immune system launches into action by producing tiny proteins called cytokines and chemokines. The cytokines reproduce almost immediately and start to attack the virus. This increase in immune cells creates an serious inflammation(炎症) throughout the body. But the worst is still to come. Meanwhile, the chemokines work with the adaptive immune system to help create T cells. These cells are a special type of white blood cell that works in a much more specific way: They find the influenza virus, identify what's special about it, and create something unique on their surface that finds and destroys similar invaders. 28.What can we infer from Paragraph 1? A.All the vaccine is not effective.

B.No one can avoid catching this year's flu.

C.This year's flu is the most serious one in recent years. D.Public health officials have to use a gun when necessary.

29.Why many parts of your body suffer while you're recovering from a flu? A.Because virus makes your feel sick.

B.Because your immune system is working against your defense system. C.Because your body is fighting hard against the flu.

D.Because the influenza virus attacks your nose, throat and other parts. 30.The underlined word \"fun\" in Paragraph 4 can be replaced by . A.joy B.battle C.exchange D.program 31.What's the main idea of Paragraph 4?

A.The fight between innate immune system and the adaptive. B.The categories of immune system. C.The way immune system works.

D.The process of the development of immune system.

The Internet and all other amazing information technology make it extremely easy for you to find any piece of information you seek. Perhaps, it is too easy. There was a time, not so long ago, when you would have to make up for the shortage of your knowledge with imagination. Now, many of those shortages have disappeared. With Facebook, for example, you don’t have to imagine where your friends and family members might be and what they might be doing. You can know all the details instantly, with pictures, videos and precise GPS.

That’s all well and good, but what is it doing to your imagination? If you ever stop exercising your physical body, it will become weak and out of shape. In order to live your daily life, you don’t have to walk great distances to cut wood or carry heavy objects. There are machines that do all that work for you. Unless you intentionally make the effort to exercise your body, it’s probably not going to happen very much.

In the same way, there are now machines and systems to fill in all the information details you need to know. And if you don’t intentionally make the effort to regularly exercise your imagination, what will happen to it? Will it decline in the same way as a muscle that’s never used?

Actually, information technology gives you the opportunity to be even more imaginative if you choose to do so. But the thing is, you have to choose it. Don’t just sit there and passively absorb all the information that’s being fed to you. Disconnect from what’s mostly predictable anyway, and dive into your creative, imaginative essence(本质). You may be a little dull at first, but you are born

to imagine and soon you’ll feel perfectly comfortable and natural exercising your imagination. Get your imagination in shape, and discover all the new and wonderful things it can bring into your life. 32.What’s the major function of paragraph 1? A.To say the Internet is challenging to us. B.To lead in the main topic of the passage.

C.To prove the Internet catches our imagination. D.To remind us of the shortage of our knowledge. 33.How does the author support his idea? A.By giving examples. B.By describing the processes. C.By making comparisons. D.By analyzing statistical findings. 34.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to? A.Information. B.Machine. C.Imagination. D.Body. 35.What’s the main idea of the text? A.Reduce our use of IT. B.Exercise our imagination. C.Use the brain scientifically. D.Exercise both mind and body. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)

We set out for the top in high spirits the moment when we arrived at the foot of the mountain. In a course of the climb. we cooperated with each other to pass the steep areas. Laughing and cheering, we eventually reached the summit, there we were greeted by the bright sunshine and fresh air. Viewing from the top, the city was beautiful.
