13、 Every minute, someone is setting up an Internet company somewhere, in the world. Each one is searching for the one great idea that could make his web company click in a big way. And they are trying all kinds of tricks to attract people towards their websites. While some websites offer sounds, cartoons and amazing photos on screen to make their sites almost a movie-like experience for the viewers, others provide free downloads and competition.

A company in California, US, has decided to offer online smells to people who visit its website. That is, if a pizza image comes on screen, your nose will catch the smell of bread and cheese! All you need to do is to connect a device (设备) called “iSmell” to your computer. This smart little device contains (包含) some chemicals that can create different kinds of smells.

The company has invented software that changes the chemical composition (成分) of different smells into digital signals (数字信号). An onscreen image, which is programmed with the proper digital signal, will start the “iSmell” device. The device will use the software to change the digital signal again and let go of the correct smell. This device reads the digital smell code (代码) from the website and creates the proper smell from its store of chemicals. This smell is then made to blow softly in the direction of the user with the support of a small fan.

In order to let go of the correct smell, the company has created a “Scent Registry”, which contains a digital index of thousands of smells. The company plans to allow website developers to integrate the proper smells in digital code to their games and images. The company is also hoping that Hollywood filmmakers will use the smell technology in their movies. Imagine audiences getting the smell of rocket fuel as a spacecraft takes off on the cinema screen! Of course, filmmakers will have to be careful not to shoot in dirty neighborhoods, which have a lot of rubbish lying around. 1.Internet companies try their best to search for great ideas to ________. The young man answered, “My father passed away when I was one year old, so it was just my mother.” “What did your mother do?” The manager seemed surprised. “She is a clothes cleaner,” the young man answered, with no feeling. “Have you ever helped your mother wash some clothes before?”

“Never. My mother always wanted me to study and read more books. She could wash clothes faster than me,” the young man seemed puzzled (迷惑) when answering.

16、 March 16 is International Sleep Day. And we should all celebrate the act of sleeping. Researchers say sleep is probably the best tool we have for memory and learning. But what about getting rest during the middle of the day?

A recent study on napping(小睡) says short periods of sleep may help our brains work better. Past studies have shown that napping can help babies and young children learn better. And napping can help brain performance in older adults. Taking a nap may also help this group of people fight off memory loss because of the increase in their age. Many Americans do nap. But one-third of all adults in the United States are also chronically(长期的) tired, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It found that 50 million to 70 million Americans have chronic sleep disorders. However, they seem to be unwilling to tell people that they take a nap. They may think that napping shows they are weak or they don’t have enough energy. It is not an uncommon opinion that only children, the very old, sick or lazy people nap. In fact, Americans sometimes do a very strange thing. Some people brag about how few hours of sleep they need each night to show that they are somehow stronger than the average human–superhuman, if you will. However, that may be changing. Many offices now offer napping rooms and napping cafes(咖啡馆) are appearing in many U.S. cities, including Washington, D.C.

Remember that an hour long nap may be too long for young, healthy adults. It is recommended that 30 minutes is enough to remove the pressure(压力) to sleep and will help people feel more awake. If people nap longer, they will get trapped into deep sleep, which can be hard to get out of. If you have trouble falling asleep at night, limit your daytime nap to under 45 minutes. Also nap before 3 p.m. 1.Who are this group of people in Paragraph 2? A.The babies. C.The older adults.

B.The children. D.The young people.

2.The underlined word brag in Paragraph 3 means __________. A.chat sadly C.whisper secretly

B.talk proudly D.speak politely

3.What may Americans think of napping in the future? A.Healthy adults needn’t take a nap. B.They won’t tell others about their nap. C.It may be common for Americans to take a nap. D.Only the old, the sick and children need a nap.

4.For a young man with sleep problems, it is good to __________. A.take a 40-minute-long noon nap

B.take a nap whenever he feels sleepy C.take an one-hour-long nap after dinner D.take a 30-minute-long nap in the evening

18、It was a cold winter day. A woman drove up to the Rainbow Bridge tollbooth (收费站). “I’m paying for myself, and for the six cars behind me,”she said with a smile, handing over seven tickets. One after another, the next six drivers arriving at the tollbooth were informed, “ A lady has already paid for your fare.”

It turned out(证明) that the woman, Natalie Smith, had read something on a friend’s refrigerator: “Practice random(随机的) kindness and senseless acts of beauty.” The phrase impressed her so much that she copied (无意识的)

it down.

Judy Foreman spotted (认出)the same phrase on a warehouse(仓库) wall far away from home. When it stayed on her mind for days, she gave up and drove all the way back to copy it down. “I thought it was beautiful,”she said. Then she wrote it at the bottom of all her letters. Her husband, Frank, liked the phrase so much that he put it up on the classroom wall for his students, one of whom was the daughter of Alice Johnson, a local news reporter. Alice put it in the newspaper, admitting(承认) that though she liked it, she didn’t know where it came from or what it really meant.

Two days later, Alice got a call from Anne Herbert, a woman living in Marin. It was in a restaurant that Anne wrote the phrase down on a piece of paper first, after thinking about it in her mind for days.

“Here’s the idea,” Anne says. “Anything you think there should be more of, do it randomly.” Her fantasies(想象) include painting the classrooms of shabby(破旧的) schools, leaving hot meals on kitchen tables in the poor part of town, and giving money secretly to a proud old lady. Anne says, “Kindness can build on itself as much as violence can.” The acts of random kindness spread. If you were one of those drivers who found your fare paid, who knows what you might have been inspired to do for someone else later. Like all great events, kindness begins slowly, with every single act. Let it be yours!

A.Kindness and violence can change the world. B.Kindness and violence can affect one’s behavior. C.Kindness and violence can reproduce themselves. D.Kindness and violence can shape one’s character. 5.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.People should practice random kindness to those in need.
