Most people want to be happy, but few know how to find happiness. Money and success alone do not bring lasting happiness. Aristotle, a Greek thinker, said, “Happiness depends on ourselves.” In other words, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier.

The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future — for example, getting into a college

or getting a good job — that we fail to enjoy the present. You should enjoy life’s simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favourite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have several close friends often live happier and healthier lives.

Another secret to living a happy life is to be active, and have hobbies where you forget your problems and time. Many people experience this dancing, or playing a sport, such as swimming. You can forget about your problems, and only think about the activity.

Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. Studies show that people feel good when they spend their time helping others. If you want to feel happier, do good things for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping to buy food for an elderly person, or simply help out around the house by washing the dishes. ( )54. Amy was looking for a gift for her little daughter. Suddenly she stopped before a store of dolls. “Girls like dolls,” she thought as she stepped into it. Looking around, she saw a grandma doll—one with gray hair and a pair of glasses. In her mind appeared Joyce, her mother.

When Amy was a little girl, she got her first doll from Joyce for her birthday. Then the

second, the third … A doll a year never arrived late.

“Why always a doll?” This question had been in Amy’s mind until one day her father gave the answer.

Little Joyce dreamed to have a doll. Her parents promised one for her fifth birthday. Sadly, they both died in a traffic accident before it arrived. The never-received gift was the most precious (珍贵的) in her eyes.

Her mother’s story being recalled (回想), Amy got an idea.

It was Joyce’s birthday. A package was sent to her with a card that read: Dear Joyce,

I forget to send you the package that you should have received on May 20, 1956, your fifth birthday. The gift inside has aged, but I felt that you might still wish to have it.

Love, Angel of Joy

Joyce opened the package and saw a lovely grandma doll. She clasped the doll that she had waited so many years for, crying softly. The doll given by “Angel of Joy”, made her the happiest “child” in the world.

It was morning. Mother Wolf was slowly waking up. Her cubs were already awake. Soon Father Wolf woke up. “It is time to hunt again,” he said.

As he walked toward the mouth of the cave where he lived with his family, Tabaqui, the jackal (豺) appeared. Wolves do not like jackals because they are dirty animals and will eat anything. They also tell lies and make trouble for the

other animals.

“Good morning, Chief of the Wolves. Perhaps you have something for me to eat,” Tabaqui said. “There is nothing here for you,” Father Wolf said.

Looking at the cubs, Tabaqui said, “Your children are so beautiful.”

This was not a good thing to say. In India, animals and people believe it is unlucky to tell children they are beautiful in front of them.

“Shere Khan, the tiger, has moved this way. He will hunt in these hills now,” Tabaqui said. “He has no right to do that. ” Father Wolf said angrily.” The law of the jungle (丛林) says so. He will frighten all the animals away, and there will be none left for me to hunt. Then Man will hunt him. Man will set fire to the grass. We shall all have to run for our lives.

Tabaqui went away. Soon after, there was the noise made by a tiger that has caught nothing and does not care who knows it.

“Shere Khan is not clever,” Father Wolf said. He has a bad leg and cannot run fast enough to catch a deer. He has been killing only sheep and making the villagers angry. I believe he will hunt Man now.

This was bad news. All the animals knew that if an animal killed a man, then other men would come with guns.

Mother Wolf saw a movement among the trees. “Something is coming,” she said.

Father Wolf got ready to jump at whatever came out of the trees, but to his surprise, it was not an animal. It was a man’s cub—a little brown baby.

“Oh, bring him here,” Mother Wolf said. “I have never seen a man’s cub before.”

Father Wolf walked toward the baby and picked him up in his mouth as if he was a wolf cub. When he put the baby down, he went immediately (立刻) to lie with the two wolf cubs.

“He is a brave child,” Father wolf said. “He has no hair, and I could kill him with a touch of my foot, but he is not afraid.”

At this moment, Shere Khan came to the mouth of cave. Tabaqui was with him. ( )61. How many kinds of animals are mentioned in the story?

A. 3

B. 4

C. 5

D. 6

( )62. From the story, we know the jackals like ___________.

①telling the truth ② eating everything ③making trouble ④keeping themselves clean A. ①③

B. ②③ C. ②③④ D. ①②③

A. The animals all like making friends with him. B. It’s silly of him to attack the villagers’ animals. C. He runs so fast that he can catch the animals easily.

D. He makes the law of the jungle in order to have the right to hunt in the hills.

( )64. Which is the correct order of the following?

Many daily American expressions are based on (以……为基础)colours.

Red is a hot colour. Americans often use it to represent heat. When they say “red-hot”, that means they are very angry about something. Loud music is popular with many people. Some may say that such music is red-hot.

Pink is a lighter kind of red. People sometimes say “I’m in the pink” when they are in good health. The expression was first used in America at the beginning of the 20th century. It probably comes from the fact that many babies are born with a nice pink colour that shows that they are in good health.

Blue is a cool colour. The old Blues music in the United States is the opposite of red-hot music. Blues is slow and sad. Someone who is “blue” is very sad.

The colour green is natural for trees and grass. But it is an unnatural colour for humans. A person who has an upset stomach may say “I’m feeling a bit green”. A person on a boat who is feeling very sick from high waves can be said “look very green”. Sometimes a person may be very jealous because he does not have anything as nice as someone has, like a fast new car. That person may say “I’m green with envy”. Some people are green with envy because someone has more dollars or “greenbacks”. Dollars are called greenbacks in American slangs because that is the colour of the bottom of their bank notes.

The colour black is used often in expressions. People may say “it’s a black day” when everything goes wrong on that day.

B. $30. C. $38. D. $45.

In some cases, colours describe a situation. Blackouts were common during the World War II. All the lights in a city were turned off at night to make it difficult for enemy planes to find their aims in the dark.

( ) 54. We describe a day on which everything goes wrong as ______.

A. a red day B. a green day C. a pink day

D. a black day

( ) 55. What does the underlined word, “blackouts” mean?

Say you're sitting around with some friends playing video games and someone mentions a game that happens to be one of your favorites.\"Oh,that game's easy.So not worth the time,\"one of your friends says. The others agree.Although you enjoy the game quite a lot,not wanting to argue with them, you go along with the crowd.

You have just experienced what is commonly referred to as peer pressure(同伴压力),also called peer influence. You will adopt a certain type of behavior, dress,or attitude in order to be accepted as part of a group of your \"peers\".As a teen, you are likely to have experienced the effect of peer pressure in a number of different areas.

We are all influenced by our peers at any age.For teens,as school and other activities take you away from home, you may spend more time with your friends than with your family. As you become more independent, your peers naturally play a greater role in your life.

According to Dr.Casey from Cornell University, teens are very quick and accurate in making decisions on their own and in situations where they have time to think. However, when they make decisions in the heat of the moment or in social situations, their decisions are often influenced by factors like peers. In a recent study, teen volunteers played a video driving game, either alone or with friends watching. The researchers discovered that the number of risks teens took more than doubled when their friends were watching, compared with when they played alone. This shows that teens may find it more difficult to control risky behavior when their friends are around,or in situations where they are extremely angry.

Just as people can influence us to make unwise choices, they can also influence us to make good ones.A teen might join in a volunteer project because his or her friends are doing it,or get good grades because his or her friends think getting good grades is important. In fact, friends often encourage each other to study,or try out for sports.

While we are always influenced by those around us,the decision to act or not is up to us.So when it comes to decision making, the choice is up to you.

( )57.According to the passage,Dr.Casey probably agrees that teens .

A.like to play driving games with their friends B.prefer situations where they have time to think C.may take more risks when their friends are around D.are slow in making decisions when they are on their own

( )58.The words\"in the heat of the moment\"in Paragraph 4 probably mean\" \".

A.when teens avoid possible risks B.when teens trust their judgment

C.when teens lose control over their anger D.when teens give consideration to situations

( )59.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Teens are eager to be different from their peers. B.Peer pressure has effects on both teens and adults. C.Peer pressure does more harm than good to teens. D.Tees think it challenging to get good grades at school.

( )60.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.Peer Pressure:Is It Necessary to Deal with It? B.Peer Pressure:Is It Possible to Get Away from It? C.Peer Pressure:Its Benefits to Teens and Friend Making D.Peer Pressure:Its Influence on Teens and Decision Making.

TV was one of the greatest inventions in the 20th century. Nowadays, nearly every household has at least one TV set.

Television came into being(出现) based on the inventions and discoveries of many scientists. On April 7, l927, the first public television programme was broadcast in the USA. The signals(信号) were received on a very small screen. It was only about the size of a business card. The pictures were reddish(微红色的) and not clear.

In the 1930s, bigger screens appeared with black-and-white pictures. However, a snowy picture was the best many TV viewers(观众) could hope for. Often, they could only get one station, and only when the weather conditions were good.

When World War Ⅱ(1939—1945) began, the development of TV stopped. There were a very small number of TV sets in the hands of the public. By 1945, there were fewer than 7,000

working TV sets in the USA. A TV set cost about half the price of a car at that time.

The time after World War Ⅱ is considered one of the golden periods of television. Families saved money during the war years, and wanted to buy a lot of things after the war. TV sets were soon put onto the ‘must-have’ list. 1950—1959 was an exciting period for television. Colour television and remote controls came out during this time. Getting a little sad, he came back for dinner. Suddenly, he saw his grandma’s duck. Without thinking, he held up the slingshot, hitting the duck in the head and killing it. He hurried to hide the dead duck in the woodpile(柴堆), only to see his sister watching! But Amy said nothing.

After lunch the next day, grandma said, “Amy, help me with the dishes.”

But Amy said, “Grandma, Ben told me he wanted to help in the kitchen.” Then she whispered to Ben, “Remember the duck?” So Ben did the dishes.

Later that day, grandpa asked if the children wanted to ride horses, and grandma said, “I’m sorry but I need Amy to help me make supper.”

Amy just smiled and said, “Well, that’s all right because Ben told me he wanted to help you.” She whispered again, “Remember the duck?” So Amy went to ride horses and Ben stayed behind to help make supper.

After several days of doing both his chores(零活) and Amy’s, Ben finally couldn’t stand it any more. He went to his grandma and said that he had killed the duck.

Pan Jiachen is a 15-year-old girl from Beijing. She is the only child of her family. She is happy and confident, but she feels lonely sometimes. “It’s not fun, especially when I travel with my parents. How I wish I could have a brother or a sister!” she said.

It could be time for Pan to realize her dream. China has ended its long one-child policy and every couple can have two children now. But what will a kid’s life be like if he or she grows up with a sibling(兄弟姐妹)?

A sibling can stop children from having bad feelings such as loneliness and fear, according to an expert(专家). “Siblings give children something that parents can’t give,” said the expert. A kid may not feel lonely because there is someone else to play with. They can also talk about different kinds of things and share secrets with each other.

But there are disadvantages too. You need to share things with your sibling, including attention from parents, toys, the bathroom and even the TV. There could be lots of competitions, arguments(争吵) and even fights. Children with siblings need to learn to compromise and control their feelings.

Even the birth order can make a difference. According to a recent research, the birth order decides how parents treat their children. It will then lead to different personalities in children. Parents are usually nervous and strict with their first child. So firstborns are often responsible and thirsty for success. When the couple has a second child, they are more relaxed. So the late-born children are usually funny and creative.

Everybody knows how important it is for students to get a good night’s sleep every night. You aren’t able to do your best and keep up with all of your tasks unless you sleep well. I’m sure you already know that you should go to bed at a proper hour. Most experts agree that the best number of hours is eight, and this has been accepted as common sense. However, I was young once and I know that most of you get much less sleep than that -- and in some cases it will influence your schoolwork.

I read an interesting article in a teacher’s magazine recently. They did a study of 848 students in Wales. Worryingly, the results showed that teenagers are facing a new problem. They may go to bed and get up at suitable times, but a growing number are waking up in the middle of the night, not to use the bathroom or have a snack but because of a new phenomenon(现象): FOMO -- Fear Of Missing Out!

According to the article, schoolchildren are suffering because of a growing trend (趋势) to wake up during the night to check their phones. Afraid of missing a reply or chance to join in a chat, teenagers are waking at all times of the night, going online. All this happens when they should be sound asleep.

Experts are worried about this growing trend and the report shows some worrying facts that I’d like to share with you:

➢ 23% of 12 to 15-year-olds wake up nearly every night to use phones. Another 15% wake up at

night once a week for the same reason.

➢ One in three students are always tired and unable to study well.

➢ Students who use phones during the night are more possible to suffer from depression (抑郁) and

anxiety.

So switch off your phones at night. The world won’t end. I give you my word that you won’t miss anything important.

I began to think that I had found a friend, and I answered him at once. ‘It's not Flint's ship any more. Flint is dead, but there are still some of Flint's men aboard, and that's bad news for us.’

‘A man with one leg?’ he asked, fear in his voice. ‘Silver?’I asked.

‘Yes ,Silver,’ he said, ‘that was his name.’

‘He's the cook, and their leader ,too.’ And I told him the fight between Flint and the cook, and the danger we were now in.

‘You're in trouble, Jim,’ he said when I'd finished. ‘Well, Ben Gunn will help you. Will your squire(乡绅) be generous if I do, do you think? I don't want him to give me a job, but will he give me one thousand pounds out of money that's really mine?’

Many parents set rules for their children’s online activity, such as limiting(限制) the amount of time they can spend online. ____________. They complain that their parents share too many photos of them online.

In a 2016 study, it was found that parents in the US share an average (平均) of 116 photos of their kids after they are born. Most were taken before the child turned 8 years old. Many of the photos showed kids in embarrassing(尴尬的) situations, like having food all over their faces, Quartz reported.

Parents do like to share their child’s progress as he or she grows up. But their kid doesn’t like it as much. In a survey of UK children between the ages of 12 and 16, 70 percent said they felt their parents didn’t respect (尊重) their online privacy (隐私), according to Digital Parenting magazine.

In addition, many kids said that other students at school sometimes pick on them after their parents post photos online, CBS News noted. In one case, a girl was bullied (欺负) by boys at school after they found her Mom’s blog. There were many family photos in the blog.

“Each time a photo or video is uploaded, it creates a digital footprint of a child, which can follow them into adult life,” a spokeswoman for a leading children’s charity in the UK said. “It’s always important to ask children for their permission (允许) before posting photos or videos of them.”

57. Which sentence can be put in the blank of the first paragraph?

A. It is necessary for parents to do so because some children have spent lots of time on the Internet B. And they have also made more rules to control the time children spend on online activities C. The second paragraph shows us _____.

A. some photos shared by parents B. a study from the US and UK

C. the fact of sharing photos in the US D. embarrassing situations of kids

59. What does the underlined phrase “pick on” mean?
