第三部分: 阅读理解(共15小题; 每小题2分, 满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每篇短文后所给各题的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 A
It's common for parents to feel emotional when the moment comes for their child to leave home and go to university. Even parents who don't speak about the event are likely to feel a sense of sadness because it’s the end of an era where you and your family were at the centre of your child's world. As a parent you’ll probably continue to support your child in different ways, but the main job of raising your child is over. It's a huge change for everyone involved.
There are a few things that you can do to make the transition easier. Plan carefully for your child's departure and think about how you can help. Many parents take their child to university for the first time. If you decide to do that, be ready to feel a real wrench when the time comes to say goodbye. Your child will probably be as nervous as you are about the moment when you finally say goodbye – but that might not show! Be positive and cheerful about the choice your child has made to continue studying, and plan to leave once you've unpacked the car and looked around your child's new living accommodations. If you can, save your tears for the car – you'll make things easier on your child and yourself.
The more you've invested in being a parent, the more you'll feel a sense of loss, so the sadness you feel now is a sign that you've been a good mom or dad. Remind yourself that parenting is all about raising an independent and confident child who functions well without you. If your child quickly settles and starts enjoying himself, you should congratulate yourself. It's also only fair to allow yourself some time to grieve(悲痛). Don't expect to pick yourself up and move on straight away. But you may decide to find a hobby or sport to fill your extra time. Perhaps you've always wanted to learn a new language, go to yoga classes or take up swimming. You may decide to spend more time with family and close friends, who are likely to be feeling the absence of your child as well.
Agree on the best approach to staying in touch before your child leaves, and stick to your agreement. Try not to panic if your child doesn't respond immediately – remember, they're starting a new and busy life.. 51. Why do parents feel sad when their child leaves home for college? A. Because the absence of their child makes them feel lonely. B. Because their children will start a new life in college.
C. Because it means the end of love between parents and their child. D. Because they are no longer the main focus of their children’s life.
52. The underlined word “wrench” in Paragraph 2 means a feeling of ________. A. sorrow B. regret C. anger D. love
53. What’s not advised as the way to recover from your child’s departure?
A. Developing a new hobby or sport. B. Learning a new language.
C. Spending more time with close friends. D. Staying in touch with your child. 54. What would be an appropriate title for the whole passage? A. Staying in Touch with Your Child B. Preparing to Say Goodbye to Your Child
C. Dealing with Your Child Leaving Home for University D. Life after Your Child Has Left Home for University B
There was one thought that air pollution affected only the area immediately around large cities with factories and heavy automobile traffic. At present, we realize that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is actually worldwide. On several occasions over the past decade, a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the east of the United States and brought health warnings in rural areas away from any major concentration of manufacturing(制造业) and automobile traffic.
In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be affected by air pollution. Some scientists consider that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels (coal and oil) is creating a “greenhouse effect” — hold in heat reflected from the earth and raising the world’s average temperature. If this view is correct and the world’s temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap(极区冰层) will melt and cities such as New York, Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be in water.
Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particular matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth’s temperature — a result that would be equally disastrous(引起灾难的). A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to a new ice age, and would make agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas.
Today we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen (though one recent government report concluded that the greenhouse effect is very possible). Perhaps, if we are lucky enough, the two tendencies will offset (相互抵消) each other and the world’s temperature will stay about the same as it is now. Driven by economic profits, people pay less attention to the damage on our environment caused by the “advanced civilization”. Maybe the air pollution is the price the human beings have to pay for their development.
But is it really worthwhile?
55. As pointed out at the beginning of the passage, people used to think that air pollution _______. A. had a damaging effect on health B. caused widespread damage in the countryside C. existed only in urban and industries areas
D. affected the entire eastern half of the United States 56. As to the greenhouse effect, the author __________. A. is uncertain of its cause B. refuses to admit as a problem
C. shares the same view with the scientist D. thinks that it will destroy the world soon
57. It can be concluded that ____________.
A. temperature almost hasn’t changed over the past decade.
B. the world’s temperature will remain the same in the years to come.
C. raising the world’s temperature only a few degrees would not do much harm to life on earth.
D. lowering the world’s temperature only a few degrees would lead to disaster to farming. 58. This passage is mainly about __________. A. the greenhouse effect B. the burning of fossil fuels C. the potential effect of air pollution D. the likelihood of a new ice age C
When families gather for Christmas dinner, some will stick to formal traditions dating back to grandma's generation. Their tables will be set with the good dishes and silver, and the dress code will be Sunday best.
But in many other homes, this china-and-silver elegance has given way to a stoneware (粗陶) and stainless informality, with dresses assuming an equally casual-Friday look. For hosts and guests, the change means greater simplicity and comfort. For makers of fine china in Britain, it spells economic hard times.
Last week Royal Doulton, the largest employer in Stoke-on-Trent, announced that it is eliminating 1,000 jobs -- one-fifth of its total workforce. That brings to more than 4, 000 the number of positions lost in 18 months in the pottery (陶瓷) region. Wedgwood and other pottery factories made cuts earlier.
Although a strong pound and weak markets in Asia play a role in the downsizing, the layoffs in Stoke have their roots in earthshaking social shifts. A spokesman for Royal Doulton admitted that the company \"has been somewhat slow in catching up with the trend\" toward casual dining. Families eat together less often, he explained, and more people eat alone, either because they are single or they eat in front of television.
Even dinner parties, if they happen at all, have gone casual. In a time of long work hours and demanding family schedules, busy hosts insist, rightly, that it's better to share a takeout pizza on paper plates in the family room than to wait for the perfect moment or a \"real\" dinner party. Too often, the perfect moment never comes. Iron a fine-patterned tablecloth? Forget it. Polish the silver? Who has time?
Yet the loss of formality has its down side. The fine points of etiquette (礼节) that children might once have learned at the table by observation or instruction from parents and grandparents (\" Chew with your mouth closed.\"\"Keep your elbows off the table. \") must be picked up else-where. Some companies now offer etiquette seminars for employees who may be able professionally but inexperienced socially.
59. Why do people tend to follow the trend to casual dining? A. Family members need more time to relax.
B. Busy schedules leave people no time for formality. C. People prefer to live a comfortable life.
D. Young people won't follow the etiquette of the older generation.
60. It can be learned from the passage that 'Royal Doulton is . A. a seller of stainless steel tableware B. a dealer in stoneware C. a pottery chain store D. a producer of fine China 61. The main cause of the layoffs in the pottery industry is .
A. the increased value of the pound B. the worsening economy in Asia C. the change in people's way of life D. the fierce competition at home and abroad
62. Formal table manners, though less popular than before in current social life,____________.
A. are still a must on certain occasions B. are certain to return sooner or later C. are still being taught by parents at home D. can help improve personal relationships D
As an experienced photojournalist in Nashville, Tennessee, I was hired by USA Today newspaper to photograph a spinal bifida (脊柱畸形) corrective surgical procedure. It was to be performed on a twenty-one week old fetus(胎儿)in uterus(子宫)at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. At that time, in 1999, twenty-one weeks in uterus was the earliest that the surgical team would consider for surgery. The worst possible outcome would be that the surgery(外科手术) would cause premature delivery(早产), and no child born earlier than twenty-three weeks had survived.
The tension could be felt in the operating room as the surgery began. A typical C-section cut was made to access the uterus, which was then lifted out and laid at the junction of the mother's thighs(大腿). The entire procedure would take place within the uterus, and no part of the child was to breach the surgical opening. During the procedure,
the position of the fetus was adjusted by gently moving the outside of the uterus. The entire surgical procedure on the child was completed in one hour and thirteen minutes. When it was over, the surgical team breathed a sigh of relief, as did I.
As a doctor asked me what speed of film I was using, out of the corner of my eye I saw the uterus shake, but no one's hands were near it. It was shaking from within. Suddenly, an entire arm thrust out of the opening, then pulled back until just a little hand was showing. The doctor reached over and lifted the hand, which reacted and squeezed the doctor's finger. As if testing for strength, the doctor shook the tiny fist. Samuel held firm. I took the picture! Wow! It happened so fast that the nurse standing next to me asked, “What happened?” “The child reached out,” I said. “Oh. They do that all the time,” she responded.
The surgical opening to the uterus was closed and the uterus was then put back into the mother and the C-section opening was closed.
It was ten days before I knew if the picture was even in focus (对焦). To ensure no digital manipulation (篡改) of images before they see them, USA Today requires that film be submitted unprocessed. When the photo editor finally phoned me he said, “It’s the most incredible picture I’ve ever seen.” 63. What may be the best title for the passage?
A. An Amazing Moment B. A Pitiful Fetus
C. An Honorable Job as a Photographer D. An Impressive Surgeon 64. In 1999, people believed that it was ________. A. possible for a fetus 21 weeks born to survive
B. likely for a fetus born 21 weeks to become abnormal
C. right time for a fetus born 21 weeks to receive an operation D. risky for a fetus 21 weeks in uterus to receive an operation
65. From what the editor said in the last paragraph, we know he was very ________. A. disappointed B. satisfied C. confident D. depressed 第四部分:阅读表达(共5题,每小题2分,满分10分)
[1]Compared to people with bad attitudes, people are less likely to suffer from colds. It’s possible that being positive helps the body fight il1nesses.
[2]In a previous study, people who tended to be cheerful and lively were least likely to develop coughs and other cold symptoms. People who showed positive feelings were also less likely to mention symptoms to their doctors, even when medical tests detected those symptoms. [3]Those findings were interesting, but they didn’t prove that a person’s attitude affects whether he or she gets sick.Instead, it was still possible that a person’s underlying personality is what matters.
[4]Evidence suggests, for instance, that certain people are naturally more likely to be outgoing and optimistic, with high self-esteem and a sense of control over life. This would mean that who we are,not how we feel, ultimately decides our chances of catching colds.
[5]To figure out which mattered more, personality or emotions, the researchers interviewed 193 healthy adults. The results showed that everyone in the study was equally likely to get infected.Their symptoms, however, differed depending on the types of emotions that they had reported over the previous fortnight.
[6]Among those who reported good moods and had been infected with the flu virus(病毒),for example, 28 percent developed coughs and stuffy noses. On the other hand, those symptoms struck 41 percent of people who had been less positive.
[7]Scientists argue about whether negative emotions or positive emotions have a stronger effect on how healthy we are.For now,it can’t hurt to look on the bright side more often than not !

We have held a discussion about whether it is good or not for a top student to share a desk with a slower student.
Some are for the idea. As they know, everyone has strengths as well as weaknesses. Although they are not good at lessons, they might do well in other fields like sports
or arts. Therefore, they can learn form each other and they may develop a friendship. In addition, top students can help slower ones gain self-confidence by helping them with their lessons, which benefits them all.
However, others don’t hold the same view. They think some slower students are always making trouble, such as keeping talking in class, breaking school rules, which may lead to them forming the bad habits. Besides, slower students often ask top students questions, which has a bad effect on their studies.
In my opinion, I would like to choose to share a desk with a slower student so that we can learn from each and make progress together
Yours, LiPing

M: I know what you mean. I like it too and other indoor sports. I like watching the weightlifting and I like boxing.
W: I' m not so keen on the fighting, but ~I don' t mind wrestling. M: ~Yes, that's great. It's really attractive and exciting. W: I want to try to get tickets for these events.
M: Good idea. It would be great to see it live. The atmosphere will be fantastic. (Text 8)
W: My oldest friend is Dorothy.
M: And how did you and Dorothy meet?
W: Well, when I met her, we were about 18 years old, and she had come to New York, and ~she
was forced to move from her apartment. She couldn't pay the rent. And so I said, \"Well,
why don't you move in with me?\" I had an apartment with an extra room, and that's how we
met. We’ve been friends since then. She’s been there for me, and I' ve been there for her, and
she's just a lot of fun.
M: What kinds of things do you do when you're together?
W: We sit around, talk about old times. We chat about a lot of friends that we have in common. Uh,
~she's a wonderful storyteller, and so I love to hear her stories, and she's a fashion
designer, so we talk about clothes and politics and a lot of things. We have a lot in common. (Text 9)
M: So, Amy, which classes do you enjoy the most in college?
W: Well, I think my language classes are probably my favorite ones right now. M: Which ones are you taking?
W: ~I'm studying French, Spanish, and Danish right now. M: Why? What made you pick those three?
W: Well. I've always loved languages. ~I thought Spanish would be the most useful. French is
the most beautiful. M: Uh-huh.
W: And ... uh ... ~I met someone from Denmark a couple of years ago and loved the language,
and I decided to study that, too.
M: That's terrific. Do you ever get them confused in your mind while you're studying? W: Yeah, a sometimes I mix them up, and it’s a disaster! M: Well. What other classes are you taking in school?
W: Um ... I'm taking a money management class right now. That's not bad. I thought it would be
just awful, but it's ... it's really kind of interesting. (Text 10)
M: Hello and welcome to Channel Five News. A forest fire started burning on Friday. ~Strong winds drove the flames toward the city, and by Saturday hundreds of families in Bellevue had to leave the area because the fire was very close to their homes. A woman was rescued from a boat ~by helicopter on Saturday. Mary was out on her boat with some friends, when she started to have stomach pains. An hour later, the pains were worse, and her friend radioed the Coast Guard. A helicopter was sent to pick her up. Then she was taken to the hospital. Another sea rescue was being attempted in Independence Bay. ~At high tide on Friday night, a whale swam into the bay. But at low tide, it couldn't swim out again, over the weekend; hundreds of tourists came to see it. But the noise scared the whale. A team of divers came to
help the whale this morning. About an hour ago, they succeeded in guiding the whale toward the open ocean.
