If Southern California isn’t your speed, perhaps Northern California is. And San Francisco is a great place for a family to explore. Start by driving, or walking, across the Golden Gate Bridge. On the west side of the city is over 1,000 acres known as Golden Gate park, home to gardens, trails, playgrounds and much more.

Without the help of a special woman, Jim Ripley wouldn’t be what he is today.
Jim and his brother, Alex, were placed into disparate adoptive homes at a young age. Because of their parents’ drug addiction, Alex was placed with the Ripley family while Jim went to live in four separate homes over the course of three years, suffering abuse (虐待) along the way. Jim and Alex only saw each other every few months, but during their visits, Mrs. Ripley grew to care for Jim, too.
“Mrs. Ripley would take us for lunch at McDonald’s as Alex always liked the food, and that’s when she first noticed the scars all over my body,” Jim wrote. “She immediately made arrangements for me to join their family.” Unfortunately, Mr. Ripley passed away from cancer shortly after Jim joined the family. But even in the face of hardship, Mrs. Ripley never once considered parting with Alex or Jim.
“Nobody would have blamed her for taking us back. But instead she took us to court and made it permanent,” Jim continued. “She must have been super stressed, but that’s not at all what I remember. I just remember the words that she gave me. They are always: ‘You’re smart.’ And ‘You’re handsome.’ And ‘You survived all bad things because you’re strong.’ There are very few forces as powerful as a mother’s love.”
Jim joined the Marines ( 海军陆战队) and graduated from law school! Now, as a father himself, he couldn’t be more grateful to Mrs. Ripley for making his life worth living and giving him a future to look forward to.

Aysha Buffet remembers mashing the potatoes in one of her favorite Filipino dishes just so she could tell her classmates she had Aussie food for dinner “like all the cool kids,” the Melbourne performer says in a show where she cooks Philippine chicken adobo with her mom.
On the new ABC-funded mini-series, Gourmet Lazy, many culturally diverse Australian performers and their moms take the audience through family dishes that their parents cooked for them as a child. Creator Brendan Wan, an Australian-born Chinese producer, says he wants to show off simple and homely meals from different cultures and make people proud of their own foods and cultures. Brendan’s mom arrived in Australia in the 1980s, and his dad is an Indonesian-Chinese migrant. He says the basic foods his parents cook are what he would always go back to.
For Melbourne comedian Urvi Majumdar, it was her first time cooking a dish with her mom from start to finish. They made a hearty Indian dish called Khichuri. Urvi says she wants to learn more about her Indian culture—including cooking—so that she can pass it on to the next generation if she has children.
“I can cook pasta, but I’m not good at curries at all. Growing up, it was always my mom cooking,” she says. Like Aysha, Urvi also recalls “trying to fit in” at school by bringing sandwiches rather than curries. But now she’s older, and she says she’s not trying to “be as Australian as possible”, and she appreciates her Indian culture.
“Being a second-generation Australian, it’s hard to find experiences that I can share with my mom. So the cooking show was a really good experience,” Urvi says.

Sulphur-crested cockatoos (葵花凤头鹦鹉) are common in Australian wood areas. But as forests have been cut down, the birds have gotten used to living near people.
In 2021, scientists at the Max Planck Institutes reported that the cockatoos had learned how to open the lids (盖子) of dustbins to find food, making a big mess. When scientists first began studying the cockatoos in 2018, only three areas near Sydney had lid-opening cockatoos. A year and a half later, cockatoos in 44 different areas knew the trick.
This time the scientists not only studied cockatoos, but also studied humans’ response. The scientists spent weeks studying more than 3,200 dustbins in four different areas of Sydney. They wanted to see how many bins were protected and what methods were used.
In one area, over half the bins were protected. The most common way of protecting them was to put some heavy objects on the lid. Some people also put things like rubber snakes on
