Kenyan police say one person was killed and 26 injured in an explosion at a bus station in central Nairobi. The blast hit a bus about to set off for the Ugandan capital Kampala. A.All taxis began to use meters. B.All taxis got air conditioning. C.Advertisements were allowed on taxis. D.Old taxis were replaced with new cabs. √ 解析:[听力原文]
Cairo is known for its overcrowded roads, irregular driving practices and shaky old vehicles, but also for its air pollution. In recent months, though, environmental studies indicate there have been signs of improvement. That\"s due in part to the removal of many of the capital\"s old-fashioned black and white taxis. Most of these dated back to the 1960s and 70s and were in a poor state of repair.
After new legislation demanded their removal from the roads, a low interest loan scheme was set up with three Egyptian banks so drivers could buy new cars. The government pays about $900 for old ones to be discarded and advertising on the new vehicles helps cover repayments. The idea has proved popular with customers—they can now travel m air-conditioned comfort and because the new cabs are metered, they don\"t have to argue over fares. Banks and car manufacturers are glad for the extra business in tough economic times. As for the taxi drivers, most are delighted to be behind the wheel of new cars, although there have been a few complaints about switching from black and white to a plain white colour.
What change took place in Cairo recently?

M: What\"s the best part of your job?
W: I soon found that what I like best about the lob was being outdoors, seeing this city changes from season to season. And there are places of scene 1 would probably never have seen in another job. And I love all kinds of weather. I like to leave the window down in a fine rain, and when I have a long drive, maybe at the end of the day, I sometimes go pass my home to tell my two little children I\"ll be home soon, when they always want to come along in my car. M: Do they? I guess kids all like to be taken for a ride sometimes.
W: Yes, but you cannot take any all along. So I\"ve to pay their fares one of these days, and take them out in my taxi, because I really think it is fun out into the countryside on the long drive, with the fresh air and sun shining. You just seem to want to drive forever. At least that is how it\"s for me.

We\"ve been practicing for weeks and we\"ve already sold a bunch of tickets. M: Uh... I\"m sorry to hear that. What are you gonna do?

四、Section C (总题数:3,分数:40.00)
Questions 16 to 18 are based on the passage you have just heard.
Questions 16 to 18 are based on the passage you have just heard. (分数:12.00)
A.They signed special contracts on that day. B.They didn\"t recognize the day legally. √ C.They had special celebration on that day. D.They felt it was just another ordinary day. 解析:[听力原文]
The year 2012 has one extra day in it—February 29th. This is because it\"s what we call a leap year. It is called a leap year because hundreds of years ago in England, the extra day wasn\"t legally recognized. Contracts that were made were apparently not seen as binding on that day. The British just leapt over that day. Therefore a year with 29 days in February is consequently called a leap year and that 29th day is sometimes called Leap Day.
There is a well-known tradition in the UK associated with 29th February, introduced many centuries ago. Women are allowed to break with tradition and propose to their boyfriends on this day. This all started back in the 5th Century, when a famous Irish saint, Bridget, complained to Saint Patrick, another famous Irish saint, that women had to wait too long for men to propose. According to the legend, Saint Patrick said any females yearning for a proposal could ask their boyfriends to marry them on this additional day in February. This so-called tradition was even written in law in the 13th Century. Scotland passed a law allowing women to propose to men in a leap year. It was said that if the men refused, they had to pay a fine!
Now in 2012, there are calls for 29th February to become a public holiday. Some people believe that it should be an official day off, because no one gets paid extra for working an extra day in a leap year. For the moment though, the British still have to go to work on this day.
How did British people treat Feb. 29th hundreds of years ago?

Questions 19 to 22 are based on the passage you have just heard. (分数:16.00)
A.Improve the efficiency. B.Employ more staff. C.Open a new terminal. √ D.Prolong working hours. 解析:[听力原文]
London Heathrow is the biggest airport in the UK, and it also handles more international passenger traffic than any other airport in the world. For this reason, expansion was planned and on 27th March a fifth terminal opened to help to cope with the many passengers that pass through the airport. The new terminal has taken a long time to plan and build. The idea was first proposed back in the 1980s. However, in spite of long preparations at Terminal 5 ahead of the grand opening, things soon descended into chaos.
There were problems from the outset as staff had difficulties finding car parking spaces and getting through security to get into the building. This caused a delay when passengers started to arrive and enough numbers of staff were not in place. Long passenger queues formed and the slow start meant that everyone had to play catch-up from the beginning. The terminal has been designed to handle 12,000 bags an hour but due to a reported \"lack of training and essential support that was promised\flights had been cancelled to try and solve the problems. Flights continued to be cancelled in the days following the opening and up to 28,000 bags have now had to be placed in temporary storage. BA, the only airline operating at Terminal 5 says it is working to clear the backlog, but the negative publicity caused by this ridiculous failure has not helped the airport or the airline\"s reputation at all.
What did Heathrow airport do to deal with the increase of passengers?
[解析] 短文中提剑希思罗机场是英国最大的机场,每天都要为大量的国际旅客提供服务,因此expansion was planned and on 27th March a fifth terminal opened to help to cope with the many passengers,由此可知,该机场是通过扩建和增加航站偻来提高对旅客的接纳力的。因此答案为选项C。 A.Passengers found it hard to park their cars. B.Security check made passengers felt unpleasant.
C.There were not enough staff to serve the passengers. √ D.The conveyor belt failed to work properly. 解析:[听力原文]
What problem did Terminal 5 face on the day of its opening?

D.Luggage problems. √ 解析:[听力原文]
What is the probable reason for the flights to be cancelled?
[解析] 短文中提到由于lack of training and essential support that was promised,大量的行李堆
积在一起,为了解决这些问题,有很多航班不得不被取消,由此可见,最有可能导致航班取消的原因是行李问题。因此答案为选项D。 A.Impressive. B.Busy.
C.Unsuccessful. √ D.Imaginable. 解析:[听力原文]
Which is the best word to describe the opening day of Terminal 5?
Questions 23 to 25 are based on the passage you have just heard. Questions 23 to 25 are based on the passage you have just heard. (分数:12.00)
A.He deserves a rest. B.He is making up a lie. C.He is too weak. √ D.He is telling a joke. 解析:[听力原文]
Perhaps because of traditional beliefs that men are tougher than women, it\"s common for British people these days to joke about men\"s weaknesses. A man who complains he\"s ill with a cold might be told he just has \"man flu\". The implication is a woman keeps working when she has a cold, while a man exaggerates its effects, in order to get some sympathy and get out of doing any work. According to the British saying, such a man is being \"a big girl\"s blouse\as manly and brave as he could be.
But now it seems maybe men aren\"t such big girl\"s blouses after all. Researchers at Leeds Metropolitan University in England imposed pain on 200 Libyan and British students, and studied how they responded. They found that although there was no difference in the unpleasantness of the pain, the men were much more tolerant about it. The women showed more sensitivity. They tolerated less pain, and were happier to admit it hurt.
So why did the men put up with more pain than women? Gender stereotypes seem to be playing a part, with women expected to be sensitive and men feeling the pressure to show they\"re manhood. The research found that these gender differences were stronger in the Libyan students than the British ones. The Libyan men also had a higher pain threshold than British men. This suggests that cultural differences also play a part in how people cope with pain. Research into pain is important, because it could help scientists develop better pain relief, and help people who live with chronic pain. Most pain killers are tested on men.
How do British people think about a man who has \"man flu\"?
[解析] 短文在开头处说,如果男士感冒时向人诉说自己很难受,人们会认为他太夸张了,并且用a big girl\"s blouse这样的话来笑话他,说他not as manly and brave as he could be,也就是说,人们会认为这样的男性太过软弱。因此答案为选项C。 A.Men are more tolerant about pain. √ B.Women are more tolerant about pain. C.People\"s mind can affect their body. D.Individual\"s sensitivity varies greatly.
解析:[听力原文]
What did researchers at Leeds Metropolitan University find?
[解析] 短文中提到根据大学研究人员的研究,...there was no difference in the unpleasantness of the pain, the men were much more tolerant about it,由此可知,男性对疼痛的耐受力比女性要高。因此答案为选项A。
A.Their living conditions. B.Their religious belief. C.Their cultural background. √ D.Their social status. 解析:[听力原文]
What makes Libyan men more tolerant about pain than British men?
[解析] 短文中提到,实验发现,利比亚的男性比英国的男性更能够耐受疼痛,这是因为...cultural differences also play a part in how people cope with pain,即文化背景造成了他们的不同表现。因此答案为选项C。
