I really love my job because I enjoy working with small children and like the challenges and awards from the job. I also think my work is important. There was a time when I thought I would never have that sort of career (职业).

I wasn't an excellent student because I didn't do much schoolwork. In my final term I started thinking what I might do and found I didn't have much to offer. I just accepted that I wasn't the type to have a career.

I then found myself a job, looking after two little girls. It wasn't too bad at first. But the problems began when I agreed to live in, so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in the evening. We agreed that if I had to work extra hours one week, she'd give me time off the next. But unfortunately, it didn't often work out. I was getting extremely tired and fed up, because I had too many late nights and early mornings with the children.

One Sunday, I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with me. I told her about my situation. She suggested that I should do a course and get a qualification (资格证书) if I wanted to work with children. I didn't think I would be accepted because I didn't take many exams in school. She persuaded me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience counted for a lot and I got on a parttime course. I had to leave my job with the family, and got work helping out at a kindergarten.

Now I've got a fulltime job there. I shall always be thankful to Megan. I wish I had known earlier that you could have a career, even if you aren't top of the class at school. 36.What is the author's present job? A.Working parttime in a college.

B.Taking care of children for a family. C.Helping children with their schoolwork. D.Looking after children at a kindergarten.

37.When staying with the two girls' family, the author ____ ____. A.was paid for extra work B.often worked long hours C.got much help from her boss D.took a day off every other week

38.Why did the author leave her first job?

A.She found a fulltime job. B.She was fed up with children.

C.She decided to attend a parttime course. D.She needed a rest after working extra hours.

39.What has the author learned from her own experiences? A.Less successful students can still have a career. B.Qualifications are necessary for a career. C.Hard work makes an excellent student. D.One must choose the job he or she likes.

In the course of working my way through school, I took many jobs I would rather forget. But none of these jobs was as dreadful as my job in an apple plant. The work was hard; the pay was poor; and, most of all, the working conditions were terrible.

First of all, the job made huge demands on my strength. For ten hours a night, I took boxes that rolled down a metal track and piled them onto a truck. Each box contained twelve heavy bottles of apple juice. I once figured out that I was lifting an average of twelve tons of apple juice every night. X k B 1 . c o m

I would not have minded the difficulty of the work so much if the pay had not been so poor. I was paid the lowest wage of that time—two dollars an hour. Because of the low pay, I felt eager to get as much as possible. I usually worked twelve hours a night but did not take home much more than $100 a week.

But even more than the low pay, what made me unhappy was the working conditions. During work I was limited to two tenminute breaks and an unpaid half hour for lunch. Most of my time was spent outside loading trucks with those heavy boxes in nearzerodegree temperatures. The steel floors of the trucks were like ice, which made my feet feel like stone. And after the production line shut down at night and most people left, I had to spend two hours alone cleaning the floor.

I stayed on the job for five months, all the while hating the difficulty of the work, the poor money, and the conditions under which I worked. By the time I left, I was determined never to go back there again.

40.Why did the writer have to take many jobs at that time? A.To pay for his schooling. B.To save for his future. C.To support his family. D.To gain some experience.

Like many American parents, my parents also let me and my brothers do things over which they worried a great deal. When I was sixteen, for example, after I finished high school and before I entered university, I wanted to spend the summer months traveling around Europe. My mother was against the idea of my traveling alone at such a young age, but my father felt that it would be a great experience for me. In the end, my father won the argument on condition that I limited my traveling to France, my mother's home, where I had many uncles, aunts and cousins spread out through the country who could provide shelter and help if I needed them.

Three years later, my younger brother decided to take a year off after his first year in univeristy and travel through the United States and the Caribbean.Again my mother was very worried and not eager to see my brother leave school, but my father encouraged him and my brother had a fascinating year working his way on trains and ships to earn passage to different ports and cities, and discovering many fascinating places and people.

Margaret, married with two small children, has been working for the last seven years as a night cleaner, cleaning offices in a big building.

She trained as a nurse, but had to give it up when her elder child became seriously ill. “I would

5 / 12

have liked to go back to it, but the shifts(工作班次) are all wrong for me, as I have to be home to get the children up and off to school.”

So she works as a cleaner instead, from 9 p.m. till 6 a.m. five nights a week for just £90, before tax and insurance. “It's better than it was last year, but I still think that people who work ‘unsocial hours’ should get a bit extra.”

The hours she's chosen to work meant that she sees plenty of the children, but very little of her husband. However, she doesn't think that puts any pressure on their relationship.

Her work isn't physically very hard, but it's not exactly pleasant, either. “I do get angry with people who leave their offices like a place for raising pigs. If they realized people like me have to do it, perhaps they'd be a bit more careful.”

The fact that she's working all night doesn't worry Margaret at all. Unlike some dark buildings at night, the building where she works is fully lit, and the women work in groups of three. “Since I've got to be here, I try to enjoy myself——and I usually do, because of the other girls. We all have a good laugh, so the time never drags.”

Another challenge Margaret has to face is the reaction of other people when she tells them what she does for a living. “They think you're a cleaner because you don't know how to read and write,” said Margaret. “I used to think what my parents would say if they knew what_I'd_been_doing,_but I don't think that way any more. I don't dislike the work though I can't say I'm mad about it.”

48.Margaret quit her job as a nurse because________ A.she wanted to earn more money to support her family B.she had suffered a lot of mental pressure

50.When at work, Margaret feels________. A.lighthearted because of her fellow workers B.happy because the building is fully lit C.tired because of the heavy workload D.bored because time passed slowly

51.The underlined part in the last paragraph implies that Margaret's parents would________. A.help care for her children B.regret what they had said C.show sympathy for her D.feel disappointed in her

A Meaningful Experience

During the summer holiday, I had a meaningful experience. I took a parttime job at a KFC fast food restaurant, working as a cleaner. The job required me to work 7 hours a day for three weeks. The job was hard and boring and seemed endless, which made me so tired that I nearly gave up half way. Early in the morning I started off for work and it kept me there until late in the evening. Before the new school term began, I finished the parttime job so well that I won praises from the boss.

I have benefited a lot from this working experience. It is hard work that makes me realize what labour means to us. As long as we take efforts to do something, we can do it well.
