Chinese Americans
Good morning. We ' 11 continue with our introduction to American minorities . Today' s focus is on Chinese Americans . FOT many years it was common in the United States to associate Chinese AmeTicans with restauTants and laundTies. People did not realize that the Chinese had been driven into these occupations by the prejudice and discrimination that used to face them in this coiHitry (美国华人迫于歧视和偏见,只能经营餐馆和洗衣店,所以填restaurants and laundrieso )
The first group of Chinese came during the California Gold Rush of 1849 . Like most of the other people, they had come to search for gold. In that largely unoccupied land, they stated a claim for themselves by placing markers in the ground. However, either because the Chinese were so different from the others OT because they worked so patiently that they sometimes succeeded in turning a seemingly worthless mining claim into a pro行table one, they became the scapegoats of their envious competitors. They were harassed in many ways. (由于华人淘金成功,遭到其他人的妒忌和欺侮,所以填successo ) Of ten they were prevented from working on their claims; some localities even
passed regulations for bidding them to own claims. Therefore, these Chinese had to seek out other ways of earning a living. Some of them began to do the laundry for the white miners; others set up small restaurants. There were few women in California in those days, and the Chinese filled a real need by doing this \"woman' s work\". Some others went to work as farmhands or as fishermen.
In the early 1860s, a second group of Chinese arrived in California. This time, they were imported as work crews to construct the first tTanscontinental Tailroad.(华人被运来修建 第一条横贯大陆的铁路,LU^Mtranscontinental railroado ) The work was so strenuous and dangerous, and it was carried on in such a remote part of the country, that the railroad company could not find other laborers for the j ob. As in the case of their predecessorsz these Chinese were almost all males and they encountered a great deal of prejudice. The hostility grew especially strong after the railroad project was completed, and the imported laborers returned to California, all out of work. Because there were so many more of them this time, these Chinese drew even more attention than the earlier group did. They were so different in every aspect: in their physical appearance, in their language, and in their Teligion. They were contemptuously called \"heathen Chinese”.(华人和白人在身体、语言和宗教方面都有所不同,因 此被称为''异教徒中国佬〃,所以填religiono )
When times were hard, they were blamed for working for lower wages and taking jobs away from white men. And these white men were actually recent immigrants themselves . Anti - Chinese riots broke out in many cities . Some even developed into arson and bloodshed. The Chinese were not allowed to make legal appeals and they were not accepted as AmeTican citizens .(华人没有上诉权,不被视作美国公民,所以说他们被剥 夺了公民权或者公民身份,因此填citizenship。) Californians began to demand that no more Chinese be permitted to enter their state. Finally, in 1882, the Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, which stopped the immigration of Chinese laborers . Many Chinese Tetumed to their homeland, and their numbeTS declined sharply in the early part of the last century.(由于社会的排斥,很多华人回国,因此在20世纪初美国的华人减少,所以此处 可概括为decreased或:reduced。)
However, during WW II , when China was an ally of the United States, the Exclusion laws were ended; a small number of Chinese were allowed to immigrate each year, and Chinese could become American citizens. In 1965, in a general revision of immigration laws, many more Chinese were permitted to settle here.
FTOHI the start, the Chinese had lived apart in their own separate neighborhoods, which came to be known as \"Chinatowns“ . In each of them the residents organized an unofficial government to make rules for the community and to settle disputes ・ Many people couldn^ find jods on the outside, and they went into business for themselves, primarily to serve their own neighborhood.(由这两句可知,起初中国人只能在华人街居住,而且在华人街之外的地方难以找到 工作,所以说他们的生活和工作都局限在华人街,因此概括为confinedtOo ) As for laundries and restaurantsz some of them soon spread in the city, since such services continued to be in demand among non-Chinese, too . To this day, certain Chinatowns, especially thoese of San Francisco and New York, are very busy, thriving communities. They have become great attractions for tourists and for those who enj oy Chinese food.
Most of today's Chinese Americans are the descendants of some of the early mineTS and Tailroad workers. Those immigTants had been uneducated fami laborers in the vicinity of Canton in Southeast China before they came to America・(如今大部分的美籍华人都是先前淘金者和铁路工人的后代,而这些人 原本是中国东南地区广东附近没有受过教育的农民,所以填uneducatedo )
Even after having lived here for several generations, Chinese Americans retain many aspects of their ancient culture. For example, their family ties continue to be remarkably strong. Members of the family lend each other moral support and also practical help when necessary. From a very young age children are taught with the old values and attitudes z including respect for their elders and a feeling of responsibility to the family. This helps to explain why there is so little juvenile delinquency among them.
The high Tegard for education, and the willingness to work very hard to gain advancement, are another noteworthy characteristics of them. This explains why so many descendants of imeducated laborers have succeeded in becoming doctors, lawyers and other professionals.(重视教育、工作勤奋的传统使华人农 民的后人出人头地,因此填diligence或者industry。) By the way, many of the most outstanding Chinese American scholars z scientists, and artists are more recent arrivals. They come from China's former upper class and they represent its high cultural traditions.
Chinese Americans make up only a tiny fraction of the American population. They live chiefly in California, New York, and Hawaii. As American attitudes toward minorities and toward ethnic differences have changed in recent years, the long-hated Chinese have gained wide acceptance. Today, they are generally admired for many remarkable characteristics, and are often held up as an example worth following. And their numeTOus contributions to their adopted land are much appreciated.(美 籍华人对美国的贡献得到了重视,所以填contributionso )
Now, we are coming to the end of our lecture. Today we've talked about what Chinese Americans have undergone since the California Gold Rush. Our focus for the next week will be on African Americans. Thank you for your attention.2> success 3、 transcontinental railway 4、 religion 5、 citizenship

M: This morning, on Today' s Money, love and dollars . In this July issue, Money Magazine takes a look at people who are on the hunt for billionaires. But what are the traps when you hunt for a partner with money? Money Magazine ' s Jean Chatzky is today's financial editor. Jean, good morning to you. W: Good morning.
M: I wanted to say it at the beginning. It just has a kind of sleazy, superficial feel toward people looking for billionaires to marry. But that's what this article is about, isn't it?
W: Well, it has the same feeling to me too . But this article is largely commenting on the fact that this is happening, this is out there. I mean I have been in Money Magazine for ten years . We have never written about anything like this before. And that's because it's never existed until now in a big way ・
M: Because there are so many billionaiTes. You mean at this point.(亿万富翁从来没有像现在这样多。) W: Right. There are 946 billionaires right now in the world. For the first time, the whole Forbes 400 was billionaires in the United States.(福布斯富豪榜中的上榜人物全部都是来自美国 的亿万富翁。) If you go one step down, there are about 85,000 people in this country with wealth of 30 million dollars or more, and it's easier to find them 讦this is something that you are out looking for, because there are dating services, dating websites that focus on helping people find other people with money.(有了交友服务及网站的支持,找到百万富翁是件轻而易 举的事。) They have names like millionairematch, com.
M: Are these women looking for men or are these men looking for women? Or is it a little bit of both?
W: It' s definitely a little bit of both. There are more billionaires who happen to be men of the 946. Only about 40 are women. So if you are set on a billionaiTe, you are going to have a tough time finding one who is a woman.(亿万富翁
中女性相比男性要少很多,所以要想找到她们是非常难的。) However, I think when we talk about this whole phenomenon of older women, youngei men, we are actually talking about richer women, pooreT men.(女性亿万富翁的追求者一般比她们要年轻很多。)We are just not saying it.
M: So a man or a woman who wants to find themselves a billionaire, besides the websites (网站是帮助找至!J亿万富翁的一种途径。)they can go to, what else is out there? W: Well. You have to figure out where the billionaires
are to begin with. And that means looking in the different industries where they exist. There are about half of all billionaires that Money Magazine looked at. They took a very scientific approach to this study and found their mates at work. So if this is something that you are up for, and you may want to go out there, get yourself an MBA OT get a job in finance OT in the investment world which is where most billionaiTes these days happen to work.(设法拿 到MBA
学位或在金融或投资业找到一份工作都可使你大大增加接触到亿万富翁的几率。)
M: The point is, what a cynical thing you are saying, get yourself an MBA so you can find yourself a billionaire. W: This is not how I want my daughter, or my son, for that matter out there dating. I want my kids to have their own money, as I am sure you do. Because when you have the money in the relationship, you have the power in the
relationship, That' s just the way it works . And so you need to know what you want in another person, but you know, there are people out there who say I want thisz I want to be wealthy, and this is one way to get there.
M: Okay. So besides getting the MBA, whatever it is, will get you closer to the person who is wealthy, what else can you do?
W: Well. You can look for common interests .(可以关注富人们经常出入的场所及爱好,从而寻求 与其相同的兴趣作为突破点来结识他们。)I mean if you look at the things that billionaires or very wealthy people do, they tend to spend a lot of money on luxury items, so focusing your interest on real estate or art galleriesz or collecting, you might get involved in charities where they are likely to be. If you don't have enough money to buy a ticket to their great ball of the year, then volunteer. But get yourself in there in a way that you are interested in the subj ect also. I think that It' s not easy to fake these things z and the good news is that many billionaires these days seem to be marrying for smarts as well as for money. They are not looking for people who can't carry on a conveTsation.(当今许多亿万
富翁喜欢与聪明并与 其有共同话题或富有的女性结为夫妇,而对于不够聪明并没有共同话题的女性则不屑与之交往,这与 是否有美丽的外表并没有关系。)
M: Yeah. I was just going to say what's into for the billionaire?
W: I think in a lot of casesz you have to ask that question, because if you are dating somebody who has all the money in the relationship, you need to know upfront what you are giving, otherwise you are going to be in trouble on the back end. M: But this whole premise of marrying somebody for money isn't like buying a house whose foundation is sand essentially.
W: I think in a large number of cases, it can be. And that's why if you go into that kind of a marriage, you' d better have a premarital agreement, and it'd better be tight, so you'd better have your own lawyer negotiating it for you. M: Alright, Jean Chatzky, thanks so much. Nice to see you. W: Me too. 12> D 13> C 14> D 15> A
