1.3 children per woman, the world’s lowest. However, the economy is not the only important factor that influences birth rate. Saudi Arabia, for example, does not have an agriculture-based economy, and it has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world. Nevertheless, it also has a very high birth rate(7. 0). Mexico and Indonesia, on the other hand, are poor countries, with largely agricultural economies, but they have recently reduced their population growth. Clearly, other factors are involved. The most important of these is the condition of women. A high birth rate almost always goes together with lack of education and low status for women. This would explain the high birth rate of Saudi ArabiA. There, the traditional culture gives women little education or independence and few possibilities outside the home. On the other hand, the improved condition of women in Mexico, Thailand, and Indonesia explains the decline in birth rates in these countries. Their governments have taken measures to provide more education and opportunities for women. Another key factor in the birth rate is birth control. Women may want to limit their families but have no way to do so. In countries where governments have made birth control easily available and inexpensive, birth rates have gone down. This is the case in Singapore, Sri Lanka, and India, as well as in Indonesia, Thailand, Mexico, and Brazil. In these countries, women have also been provided with health care and help in planning their families. These trends show that an effective program to reduce population growth does not have to depend on better economic conditions. It can be effective if it aims to help women and meet their needs. Only then, in fact, does it have any real chance of success.

Maggie was very glad that James was not a frequent visitor to the house. In the children’s opinion, they had something that they couldn’t explain or understand about him and that excited their imagination. He stirred Maggie’s anger, however, so that she often said to her husband, “It’s a mercy that brother of yours doesn’t come oftener. “ In fact James came once a year, unexpectedly, around eight o’clock in the evening, and he stayed for six hours of close discussion with his brother. His arrival was a signal to the children that their bedtime would be delayed. Not that he ever spoke to them or played with them. He took no notice of them, as if he was unable to see children, at least until the time came for him to go. Indeed, after his first greeting and a careless kiss, James took no notice of Maggie, either, except to add,

“ You’ll be getting on with the supper, Maggie. “Such was his regard for her. Maggie paid him back in her own way. She kept the children up, the four of them, to keep her company, she said, but of course they sang and made a noise and broke the endless sound of James’ voice. Very late, they dropped off to sleep in their chairs. Then, when James was about to go, Maggie woke them up and so more or less forced him to part with four shillings before he left. That gave her some satisfaction, for James, though rich, was unwilling to give or share what he had. He always went home by the last train, just after two o’clock. Maggie’s children secretly stared at their uncle. They could not forget that he had, in their mother’s words, “lost two wives and taken a third. “ They wondered about those two unfortunate, lost ladies. They asked each other what their fate (命运) had been, and if neither could ever be found again. James never brought his third wife with him nor ever mentioned her. The children decided that he must be so frightened of losing her that he never allowed her outside the door.

Three Ways to Become More Creative Most people believe they don’t have much imagination. They are wrong. Everyone has imagination , but most of us, once we become adults, forget how to access it. Creativity isn’t always connected with great works of art or ideas. People at work and in their free time routinely think of creative ways to solve problems. Maybe you have a goal to achieve, a tricky question to answer or you just want to expand your mind! Here are three techniques to help you. This technique involves taking unrelated ideas and trying to find links between them. First, think about the problem you have to solve or the job you need to do. Then find an image, word, idea or object, for example, a candle. Write down all the ideas/words associated with candles: light, fire, matches, wax, night, silence, etc. Think of as many as you can. The next stage is to relate the ideas to the job you have to do. So imagine you want to buy a friend an original present: you could buy him tickets to a match or take him out for the night. Imagine that normal limitations don’t exist. You have as much time/space/money, etc. , as you want. Think about your goal and the new possibilities. If, for example, your goal is to learn to ski(滑雪) , you can now practice skiing every day of your life (because you have the time and the money). Now adapt this to reality. Maybe you can practice skiing every day in December, or every Monday in January. Look at the situation from a different point of view. Good negotiators (谈判者) use this technique in business, and so do writers. Fiction writers often imagine they are the characters in their books. They ask

questions: what does this character want? Why can’t she get it? What changes must she make to get what she wants? What does she dream about? If your goal involves other people, put yourself “ in their shoes”. The best fishermen think like fish!

36. According to the passage, when we become adults, ______. A.most of us are no longer creative B.we can still learn to be more creative C.we are not as imaginative as children D.we are unwilling to be creative

第一段中“Everyone has imagination, but most of us,once we become adults, forget how to access it.”

37. According to the first technique, if you need to solve a problem, ______. A.you could find an image and try to link it with the problem B.you should link it with candles

C.you have to think of buying a present for a friend D.you should link it with as many words as possible

第二段中“First, think about the problem you have to solve or the job you need to do.Then find an image, word, idea or object, for example,a candle.”

38. The second technique suggests that you just imagine______. A.setting a goal is as simple as skiing B.new possibilities will soon appear

C.December and January are the best months for skiing D.you have every resource to achieve your goal

第三段中“Imagine that normal limitations don’t exist.You have as much time/space/money,etc.,as you want.”

39. The phrase “put yourself ‘ in their shoes’” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to______.

A.dress yourself like them B.think as they would C.do as they ask you to D.put on their shoes

40. We learn from the third technique that a good salesman should ask himself: ______?

A.What do I usually do

B.What did my boss tell me to do C.What are my customers’ needs D.How should I sell my products

由第四段中“If your goal involves other people,put yourself‘in their shoes’.”
