The One Question
I constantly ask myself one question: \"What do I want to achieve in Trend Micro?\"
My answer is below. Some of this won't be a surprise to you. But I think about this question and the answer a lot because it gives me a sense of what we are all doing at Trend and what binds us together as Trenders. I encourage you to think about these answers but more importantly your own answer to this question. It is always good to be reminded of the bigger picture which can often get lost.
So what do I want to achieve in Trend Micro?
I want to create a company that:
Is a fun place to work
In our lives, we hopefully all find time to let loose, have fun, get a bit crazy, and enjoy life. I want Trend Micro to be the kind of place where people can do this, too. I want to create a place where people find intrinsic value and enjoyment in their work, not just come in for a few hours every day and collect a paycheck. I think the way to do this is to foster an environment where Trenders are able to both explore and realize their full potential. On this topic, I am often reminded of a quote from Thomas Edison: “I never did a day’s work in my life. It was all fun.” My hope and my goal is that Trenders will describe Trend Micro the same way.
Encourages people to take risk
There are many ways to grow a company, and unlike our competition, we have chosen not to do this through acquisition, but organically. This strategy depends on our innovation, which in turn depends on our creativity and willingness to take risks. We have many examples of delivering innovation and creativity already: Internet gateway antivirus scanning, EPS, our relationship with Cisco. But a strategy that depends on innovation comes with the cost and risk of failures. I want Trend Micro to be a place where people feel they are allowed to fail and where they can and do learn from their mistakes.
Enables collective learning
There has been a lot of change in our industry – in the competitive landscape, in the evolution of technology, in customer behavior, in digital threats. Even the way we work has changed a lot. All of this change means we have to learn and adapt quickly as a team. But to do this, we have to communicate well with each other. With more ways to stay connected, are we getting better at communicating? Are we good about passing on information to each other? And do we really listen to each other? I believe
1
we can be a great learning organization that fosters good communication. In fact, we have a very good example of having done this in some ways over the past 18 months with segmentation. It has taken all Trenders learning and communicating together to get us to this point. And we have changed the face of this company together. I want this kind of collective learning to continue in Trend Micro.
Is trusted deeply by our customers
This one goes without saying, but I want Trend Micro to be a company that customers put their complete trust in. To do this, we must truly understand what they need. Why do they turn to us (or our competition) to solve their problems? What is it they are really trying to achieve? If we don’t know the answer to these questions, what are we doing to find the answers? Sometimes we assume we already know what is best for our customers and create technical solutions that we believe will solve their problems. This may or may not be true, but the only way to know for sure is to ask them, and others involved in delivering value to them, such as our channel partners and technology alliances. If we make it a habit to understand our customers, then we will always give them solutions they really need. And in the end, we will be a company they will always trust to do that.
Is a good global citizen
Last but certainly not least, I would like to see Trend Micro use its skills, its resources, and its place in the world to create value not just for our customers, but for our community. We have and can continue to do this in so many ways, big and small, and my goal is to ensure Trenders can always contribute to this end.
So that is the answer to what I want to achieve in Trend Micro.
Sometimes on the same flight I ask myself “What do I want to achieve in life?\"
For me, Trend Micro is an integral part of realizing what I want to achieve in my own life’s journey. I do not and cannot decouple the two. And I hope that you as Trenders do not either. We spend so much of our time and energy working here that I feel it must be a place where both professional and personal drive and achievement can be mutually achieved.
Here is one thing you may not know about me. My favorite song is John Lennon's “Imagine.” “You may say I’m a dreamer. But I’m not the only one.” (Sometimes I sing this loudly in the shower but I will spare you from hearing me sing it.) I hope you can join me, dear Trenders, to ask and to answer for yourselves \"What do I want to achieve in Trend Micro? And what do I want to achieve in my life?\"

“Self-awareness is the Key to Success”
To ensure that all of you as Trenders around the world share a common set of values and perspective to help you drive towards our shared vision and mission, there are lots of valuable things , but if you have to remember just a few, here they are:
1) The wisest phrase uttered in Trend Micro: \"I don't know.\"
Knowing the boundaries of what you can and can’t do is knowing who you are. Admitting to others where these boundaries are is a sign of this self-awareness, of humility, and of a willingness to listen and to learn. It takes courage to admit to others that you don’t know the answer – but it is that same courage that can fuel so many other
wonderful things. The courage to let others show you the way. The courage to be creative. The courage to take risks. The courage to fail and to get up and try again. If you know who you are and what you can do today, then you will also know what you have the potential to do tomorrow. Know what you don’t know.
2) The most admirable attitude in Trend Micro: \"Stay hungry.\"
Unpredictability. It defines our business. There is no typical day at Trend Micro, but one thing holds true every day: that something we don’t know about in advance might happen to our customers. Our job is to help them. To be on guard and be ready to do whatever it takes. It is important as Trenders to have a passion for helping our customers and for doing it better than our competition. This business is not just about having great technology; it is about providing great service. When we put the extra effort, it matters. Have you read the Stanford University commencement speech by Steve Jobs in June 2005?
3) The most valuable business activity in Trend Micro: tosurrender my control and let the customer guide my direction.
Customers are why we exist. Don’t guess or assume you know what they want or need. Don’t do or create something because you think it’s the best option. Take the time to understand what the customer thinks. Know what their goals are and why they need our help to achieve them. Use this knowledge to inform everything you do. It is the key to Trend Micro’s continued success.
4) The most innovative thinking in Trend Micro: break your assumptions.
Our industry changes fast. The threats plaguing our customers even faster. To operate with the same underlying assumptions year after year is a dangerous place to be – those assumptions, however, good they were at one point in time can be the complete opposite down the road. Don’t stick to past principles and operating models, even if they were right before. Don’t keep doing things the same way over and over again if it isn’t relevant to our direction anymore.
Keep questioning yourself. Am I doing this today because I have always done it that way? Am I making this decision because it has always worked well for me in the past? Does the result of my action further our direction?

At the end of the day, we are all here to run a business. And that means creating value – for customers, for shareholders, for employees. To create unique value, you need to understand our strategy. Our strategy is the way in which we will create that value, achieve our vision and mission, and do it in a way that is differentiated from our competitors. But uniqueness for uniqueness sake is not the end. We have to create the kind of value that matters most – the kind that drives the customer to choose us and only us. So test yourself everyday.
Ask the questions “Did I create value today? Are the things I’m about to do today aligned with our company vision and mission?” If not, don’t do it. If so, keep doing it.
We have grown very quickly over the year and there are so many new Trenders that have joined us in these last 12 months. To our newest Trenders, think about the 4 tenets above. Be willing to let go of what you’ve known or done in the past, and open yourself up to new ways of thinking, new assumptions, new challenges, and new possibilities. Many of you have to come Trend with great successes in your past, and we welcome the chance to learn from those experiences. But remember to not let it blind you as well. The true spirit of Trend Micro is to know who you are, to set aside your ego, to have the courage to be creative and the courage to fail. If your intentions are pure and your actions aligned with our direction, you will quickly learn that if you fall, you will easily find compassion and a helping hand from others around you.
